Hamlet by Shakespeare



Hamlet is a Prince of Denmark.His father has been murdered by his uncle Claudius and he married his mother Queen Gertrude.On a dark night, a ghost walks in the castle. The ghost looks exactly like Hamlet's dead father. The ghost tells Hamlet that his uncle has murdered him and orders Hamlet to take his revenge. Hamlet takes a decision to kill his uncle but he is thoughtful and enters in deep sadness or apparent madness.
Claudius and Queen are worried about Hamlet but their lord suggests that he may be in love with Ophelia.
A group of travelling actors came to the castle. Hamlet makes a plan to create the same scene in which he believes his father was murdered. When the same scene appears in the play, King Claudius stood and left. Hamlet was now sure that his father was killed by his uncle. He went to kill him but his uncle was praying so he changed his decision. Because killing during the prayer time will send the soul of Claudius straight into heaven which Hamlet did not want. Claudius now made a plan to sent Hamlet to England and wrote an order for the king of England to murder Hamlet. In the mean time, Hamlet went into his mother's room but there was a man hiding behind a tapestry. Hamlet thought he would be Claudius, so he took his sword and stabbed him but actually he was the father of Ophelia.
When Ophelia learnt about the death of his father, she went mad with grief and drowned in the river. Ophelia's brother who had gone to France, returned and when he knew about the death of his father, he decided to kill Hamlet.
Mean while, Hamlet also returned home because his ship was attacked by pirates while going to England.
Claudius now made a plan to use Leartes desire of revenge for his use. He arranged an innocent fighting sport or a fencing match. But Claudius had poisoned the blade of Leartes and put poison in the goblet from which Hamlet will drink during the break time.
The fight started, Hamlet scored first but refused to drink. Instead, Gertrude took a drink and died. Leartes injured Hamlet but he did not die immediately.
Leartes revealed that Claudius is responsible for Queen's death. After that Leartes died. Hamlet then stabbed his uncle and forced him to drink the rest of the poisoned wine from the goblet. Claudius died and after achieving his revenge Hamlet died as well.
At that moment, Norwegian Prince named Fortinbras, who has led his army to Denmark enters with ambassadors from England. He is stunned at the horrible sight of the entire royal family lying dead on the floor. Fortinbras took charge of the whole kingdom. The scholar Horatio told the tragic story of Hamlet to the Norwegian Prince. The Prince orders that Hamlet be carried away in a manner suiting a fallen soldier..

The Hunt by Mahashweta Devi

‘The Hunt’ forms part of a collection published as  Imaginary Maps: Three Stories by Mahasweta Devi in 1995. The other two stories in the collection are namely ‘ Douloti the Bountiful’ and ‘Pterodactyl, Puran Sahay, and Pirtha. ’ All three stories describe a fictional rendition of situations that are very real in the lives of the tribal people.
