"To The Lighthouse" by Virginia Woolf
As a part of our study we learn structuralism and how structuralist do their work. This blog task is a part of our co-curricular activities of our department which is given on this blog
3) Considering symbolically, does the Lighthouse stand for Mrs. Ramsay or the narrator (Virginia Woolf herself who is categorically represented by Lily)? (Key: Take help from the presentation on Symbolism to connect Mrs. Caroline Ramsay with Lighthouse. Secondly, the narrator / author cannot fully disappear from the novel and thus the stoicism of Lily to paint and thus prove that she can paint, is symbolically presented in stoicism of Lighthouse. Read 'lighthouse' symbol from presentation slide with this insight to connect lighthouse with the narrator. Give your concluding remarks in the comment below in this blog ).
Answer:- The Light house is the symbol used for Mrs
Ramsay. She is standing straight in the storms of emotions and minor clashes
among family members as light house is standing and guiding force for the
voyager. Lily sometimes carries the feelings of writer. Woolf had overcome her
own struggle with society as well as her inner self, which brought stoicism.
When Lily paints, she remembers Mrs Ramsay. If we talk about Mrs.
Ramsay, she was represented as a caring homemaker, which shows the reality of
the Woolf, stressing understanding between certain of the characters in the
novel and her own family. She explicitly relates the contents of the look to
her own parents and childhood that she has to always suppress herself ego in
front of the male.
5) What do you understand by the German term 'Künstlerroman? How can you justify that 'To The Lighthouse' is 'Künstlerroman' novel?
Answer:- As I understand Kunstlerroman novel means ‘novel
about growth of an artist’. The Lighthouse is a kunstlerroman novel because
here we find two artists growth. Beginning of the novel we see that Lily was
started to her painting and the middle of the novel we find that she left her
painting and the end of the novel we find that she complete her novel so here
we find that artists growth in mind means through her all ling period she
continuously thinking about her painting, so here we can say that growth
of an artist’s mind.
9) What does the catalogue named as 'Army and Navy' signify? What does cutting of 'Refrigerator' signify?
Answer:- ‘Army and Navy’ and Refrigerator are connected
with preserve or shaper of culture. The catalogue I n To the Lighthouse does
not have a date, but it does have a name. War and consumption are linked in the
same object. Why Virginia Woolf put here reference of refrigerator and why
James cut only refrigerator? So here Mrs.Ramsay is training and shaping
her children’s mind. Here instrument of science and occupied of same
sphere as technology and war in linked that science and tech. has this war
effect of novel. And War and consumptions are linked in the same object. So we
see that war and refrigerator has symbols and Refrigerate is Mrs.Ramsay. War
images id bold, death and fight but may be in this novel. At that time both are
symbol and refer in this novel each and every of scene of novel.
10) Why did Virginia give such prominence to the tale of the “Fisherman’s Wife”? In particular, why did she weave such a misogynist tale into the fabric of a book which so eloquently challenges received patriarchal notions about the roles and capabilities of women?
Answer:- In this novel we will find the representation of fairy tale told by Mrs.
Ramsay to her children which shows barrenness and unreasonable
demand from the husband which shows that how Mrs. Ramsay has to bent upon the
bad mood of her husband that a women should not speak or quarrel with
anybody especially her husband otherwise she will known as uncultured
women. So it shows suppressed desires of women like Mrs. Ramsay. Mrs. Ramsay
always used to fulfill the ego of her husband, which we will find into the
story of fisherman’s wife also. So the cutting of the fish is also shows the
comment upon the male dominant and the danger of male willfulness. So we can
say that fisherman’ fairy tale was related with Mrs. Ramsay and Lily has
suppressed desires as womanhood. Which is great narrative quality found into
the novel by Virginia Woolf?
Superb!
